Who is match referee Walter López?

During his two-decade career in domestic soccer, the 43-year-old has been entrusted with several Guatemalan league finals. Most recently, he took charge of the second leg of Guastatoya’s win over Municipal in the Apertura 2020 championship decider.

In the continental club game, López’s most significant assignment to date is June’s 2023 CONCACAF Champions League final, which featured a team from the US. He oversaw the first leg in Mexico as Club León beat MLS champions Los Angeles FC 2-1, on their way to securing their first ever CONCACAF crown.

López also has experience of officiating an intercontinental final: in December 2014, he refereed Real Madrid’s 2-0 FIFA Club World Cup triumph over San Lorenzo in Marrakech, Morocco.

In international soccer, the Guatemalan’s biggest game so far is the 2017 Gold Cup final - another match with American involvement.
