Avocados, especially when sliced and placed on toast, may have seemed like a fad in the early 2000s. But, happily, they are here to stay. And to make sure they are paid the attention they deserve, they have their own day – National Avocado Day! History of National Avocado Day Originating in south-central Mexico, avocados have been around for thousands of years, but likely were not cultivated until around 500 BC. Even then, the first mention of this fruit in the English language wasn’t until 1696. By 1871, the avocado had been introduced to the United States, where they grew particularly well in California. But it took some time – more than 100 years – for them to come into popularity in the US. This was probably because the fruit seemed exotic and most people really didn’t know what to do with it or how to g

Russian missile attacks leave few options for Ukrainian farmers looking to export grain

The collapse of the Black Sea grain deal and a series of missile strikes on Ukrainian grain silos and ports have left farmers with few options to export their grain — and all of them are getting more expensive PAVLIVKA, Ukraine -- The summer winds carried the smell of burned grain across the southern Ukrainian steppe and away from the shards of three Russian cruise missiles that struck the unassuming metal hangars. The agricultural company Ivushka applied for accreditation to export grain this year, but the strike in mid-July destroyed a large portion of the stock, days after Russia abandoned the grain deal that would have allowed the shipments across the Black Sea without fear of attack. Men shirtless and barefoot, with blackened soles from ash, swept unburnt grain into piles and awaited the loader, whose driver deftly steered around twisted metal shrapnel, bits of missile and craters despite his shattered windshield. They hoped to beat the next rain to rescue what was left of the c

The current security environment is the worst since the end of World War II, according to the 2023 edition of Japan’s defense white paper approved by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s Cabinet. It is the first under the National Security Strategy the government adopted in December, stating the need to bolster strike capability with long-range missiles like Tomahawks, a controversial plan seen as a break from Japan's self-defense-only postwar principle. Wedding photographers adapt to couples who want instant images and less tradition on their big day

More and more couples are throwing out the playbook for a traditional wedding -- and posing new challenges for the people they hire to create the perfect images of their big day NEW YORK -- More and more couples are throwing out the playbook for a traditional wedding -- and posing new challenges for the people they hire to create the perfect images of their big day. Getting married has traditionally involved a large reception, and rituals like cake cutting, multiple toasts and time for dancing. A wedding photographer would capture it all -- and the newly hitched couple would then wait weeks or months for the pictures. The pandemic and social media have upended those traditions. During the pandemic, many weddings turned into elopements. Social media images and videos took center stage when people couldn’t gather for a big ceremony. Wedding photographers say some of the pandemic trends are sticking around. They’re being asked to shoot more elopements and micro weddings – weddings with 5

Homeless RI: A call for community engagement – Vincent Marzullo

by Vincent Marzullo – commentary to RINewsToday The night before Tuesday’s Charles Street Tent Encampment demonstration I received an email from RI Department of Transportation (DOT) Director, Pet er Alviti, suggesting that my advocacy has contributed to RI’s public handling of homelessness. I responded to Mr. Alviti by stating: “this is on your boss, our Governor, who’s in denial and has delayed now for a few years to move forward aggressively with ARPA funds to develop more affordable housing, permanent supportive housing, and increased shelter capacity.   It’s also apparent that Rhode Island lacks the leadership and integrity to work collaboratively in a multi-jurisdictional manner with the appropriate community stakeholders.  As a former Federal administrator who has aided FEMA response operations, FEMA would never run a disaster relief operation in the way that the Governor & you have conducted the public’s Business .  This Administration makes F Troop look lik

Google explores AI tools for journalists

Google is exploring using artificial intelligence tools to write news articles and is in talks with news organizations to use the tools to assist journalists , a company spokesperson said late on Wednesday. The spokesperson did not name the publishers, but the New York Times reported that Google has held discussions with the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal-owner News Corp and even the New York Times, among others. These AI tools could assist journalists with options for headlines or different writing styles, for instance, in a way that "enhances their work and productivity," the Google spokesperson said, adding it was in the "earliest stages of exploring ideas". "Quite simply these tools are not intended to, and cannot, replace the essential role journalists have in reporting, creating, and fact-checking their articles," the spokesperson said. However, some executives who saw Google's pitch described it as unsettling, the NYT said,

Transfer business Arsenal need to do after Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice signings

Image
At the end of what Arsene Wenger described as an 'average game' against Fulham in 2011, the Arsenal manager left the pitch at Craven Cottage to chants of 'spend some f***ing money'. On the back of a season tinged with the disappointment of a League Cup final defeat, Wenger felt the need to readjust fans' expectations ahead of the summer window. "We can't buy players for £50m," he declared. "That is a fact." The financial landscape at Arsenal has emphatically changed in the subsequent 12 years. Mikel Arteta - who was signed by Wenger in 2011 for considerably less than £50m - has already splurged more than £200m on three players this summer. Jurrien Timber (£40m) and Declan Rice (£105m), along with Kai Havertz (£65m), have been added to a squad which led the Premier League for 248 days last season only to finish behind Manchester City in May. Despite the eye-watering outlay, Arsenal's summer business is not yet completed. Here's everyt
