Recapping the revolt in Russia, through the words of 4 presidents and a mutinous warlord

The dramatic rebellion by a mercenary warlord in Russia that challenged President Vladimir Putin was punctuated by dramatic language of the key protagonists – and some long silences WARSAW, Poland -- Civil war. An evil that must be stopped. Fratricide. A bug about to be squashed. The dramatic weekend rebellion by a mercenary warlord in Russia that challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin was punctuated by dramatic language from the key protagonists — and some long silences — as the world held its collective breath at the biggest challenge to Putin's rule of more than two decades. Mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin incited a rebellion against Russia's military leaders and sent his troops toward Moscow but aborted his mutiny when Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko brokered an agreement that included exile for the warlord in Belarus. Though short-lived, the revolt rattled Russian power circles, tarnished Putin’s aura of complete control and gave Ukrainians hope that Russ

Ron DeSantis made a rare comment on Tuesday about the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol two years ago, which he has previously condemned while suggesting they are over-covered. During an event in Hollis, New Hampshire, the GOP presidential hopeful was asked by a 15-year-old audience member if he believed that Trump “violated the peaceful transfer of power." DeSantis emphasized the electoral danger, as he put it, in “re-litigating things that happened three years ago” before saying, “I wasn’t anywhere near Washington that day. I have nothing to do with what happened that day. Obviously, I didn’ t enjoy seeing what happened, but we’ve got to go forward on this stuff." “If this election is about [President Joe] Biden's failures and our vision for the future, we are going to win. Mikel Arteta explains why Barcelona 'needed' to appoint Xavi as manager

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised Barcelona for ap point ing Xavi as their head coach back in November 2021. La Blaugrana parted ways with then- manager Ronald Koeman while sitting mid-table in La Liga. A top-four finish looked unlikely and they were on the verge of elimination from their Champions League group. Xavi returned to Camp Nou from Qatari side Al Sadd and managed to steer Barça to an unlikely second-place finish in La Liga. They went one better in 2022/23, winning their first league title since 2019. In a wide-ranging interview with MARCA , Arteta - who came through La Masia with Xavi - said that bringing in a figure like the former midfielder was important for Barcelona to reach the top again, hailing his side as 'very reliable'. Mohamed Salah explains why Roberto Firmino is one of Liverpool's best ever players

Mohamed Salah has declared that departing teammate Roberto Firmino will be remembered as one of the 'best players to ever play for Liverpool'. Firmino's exit from Anfield after eight seasons with the club was announced in March. The 31-year-old was coming towards the end of his contract and no longer able to hold down a regular starting place, despite still making substantial contributions off the bench. The player himself later said: "The cycle here is ended and I understand it is time to go." In total, Firmino scored 111 times for Liverpool in 362 appearances. He also won six trophies during the club's most concentrated period of success since the glory days of the 1980s - including the Champions League and a first domestic league title in 30 years. A huge part of Liverpool's success in the last few years was Firmino's on-field relationship with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, a trio that was at times the best attacking unit in the world. Quartararo: Yamaha MotoGP bike "will not be fast anywhere" if it's not quick at Assen

Image
Quartararo has enjoyed a lot of success at the TT Circuit Assen in his grand prix career, scoring podiums in all three classes of the world championship. In 2021, he scorched to victory at the venue on his way to that year's title and was a factor in the podium battle last year before crashing out. In the modern MotoGP era dating back to 2002, Yamaha has won the Dutch GP 10 times. With the 2023 season still proving to be difficult for Yamaha, Quartararo believes his Assen form will essentially dictate how the rest of the campaign will go for the Japanese marque. "For me, it's clear a track where if we don't go fast here, we will not be fast anywhere, because I think that basically it's one of my favourite tracks," Quartararo said on Thursday at Assen. "I've always been fast on this track, even if you have some difficulties with the bike. In Sachsenring we expected to be fast, we were not fast. "So hopefully we can make a great result

Man Utd takeover: Gary Neville slams Glazers for 'embarrassing' sale process

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has lashed out at the club's owners, the Glazer family, for their indecision on their potential sale. The Glazers confirmed back in November that they would consider offers of outside investment or for a party to buy the club. They have received offers from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani for Man Utd but they have not confirmed a preferred bidder, despite setting an initial deadline of April 28 for the process . Sheikh Jassim recently launched his fifth and 'final' bid for total control of Man Utd and he is confident of securing a deal ahead of Ratcliffe, though the club have played down reports of entering an exclusivity period with the Qatari. The Glazers have been universally unpopular among Man Utd supporters ever since they took control of the club back in 2005 and fans have been longing for their exit since. US says price caps on Russia's oil are cutting revenue nearly in half and weakening its economy

When the Group of Seven nations, the European Union and Australia last year announced a plan to cap the price of Russian oil, U.S. officials said it would deliver a most effective blow to Russia’s economy, undermining its greatest revenue source WASHINGTON -- A top Treasury Department official said Thursday that the cap on the price of Russia's oil is severely curtailing its greatest source of revenue as it wages war in Ukraine. When the United States and other economic powers in the Group of Seven, along with the European Union and Australia, last year announced an ambitious plan to cap the price of Russian oil, U.S. officials said it would deliver a crippling blow to Russia’s economy . “In just six months, the price cap has contributed to a significant decline in Russian revenue at a key juncture in the war,” Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said in remarks Thursday at the Center for a New American Security, pointing to a nearly 50% drop in Russian oil revenues compared

Marquez backed off in MotoGP sprint as result was "not enough" for risk

The Honda rider endured a bruising Saturday at the Sachsenring having crashed three times in qualifying on his way to seventh on the grid. Briefly running fifth in the sprint , Marquez faded to 11th at the chequered flag to end a MotoGP contest of any kind at the Sachsenring without a win for the first time ever. Marquez says after qualifying that he saw "the balance was not enough" to justify the risks for poor results, and after several early moments in the sprint he elected to back off to just get to the finish. Asked if the Germany sprint was just about seeing the chequered flag, Marquez said: "Yeah, basically yes. It's true that today I got up and we are in Sachsenring, my energy is positive. "On wet conditions, as normal we are fast and I was there. But as soon as we have a dry track we are struggling a lot. "In that [mixed] situation in the qualifying practice, I was pushing and crashing and coming back into the box and pushing again. &

Aleix Espargaro ‘hates seeing how easy’ Ducati MotoGP bike is to ride

Image
Espargaro battled through a heel injury from a cycling accident at Mugello last weekend to qualify eighth and stay there for the sprint, before snatching sixth from KTM’s Jack Miller in the Italian Grand Prix. Ducati dominated the weekend at Mugello, with Francesco Bagnaia taking pole, sprint victory, grand prix win and fastest lap, while the Italian brand locked out the rostrum in both contests. It has won all but one grand prix in 2023 and all but two of the sprints. Commenting on Ducati’s form in MotoGP right now, Espargaro said: “The thing I hate the most is how easy you see how they ride. “Even Pecco’s pole position lap, he had no movement at all. It looked like a Formula 1 [car], with the stability they have. “It’s crazy the amount of power they are able to put on the ground. So, we could not match this.” Aleix Espargaro, Aprilia Racing Team Photo by: Gold and Goose / Motorsport Images Espargaro admits his grand prix form came as a surprise as he felt like h
