Job vacancies, quits plunge in July in stark sign of cooling trend in the US labor market

Businesses posted far fewer open jobs in July and the number of Americans quitting their jobs fell sharply for the second straight month, clear signs that the labor market is cooling in a way that could reduce inflation WASHINGTON -- Businesses posted far fewer open jobs in July and the number of Americans quitting their jobs fell sharply for the second straight month, clear signs that the labor market is cooling in a way that could reduce inflation. The number of job vacancies dropped to 8.8 million last month, the Labor Department said Tuesday, the fewest since March 2021 and down from 9.2 million in June. Yet the drop appeared to be even steeper because June's figure was initially reported as 9.6 million. That figure was revised lower Tuesday. July's figure was still healthy historically — before the pandemic the number of openings had never topped 8 million. And there are still roughly 1.5 available jobs for each unemployed worker, which is also elevated but down from a pe

Erik ten Hag gives Raphael Varane injury update after Nottingham Forest win

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United are still awaiting news on the injury Raphael Varane suffered which forced the defender off at half time of their 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest . The former France international was withdrawn with the Red Devils 2-1 down after a shocking opening five minutes that saw Taiwo Awoniyi and Willy Boly put the visitors two goals ahead before Christian Eriksen halved the deficit. Victor Lindelof replaced Varane as United sought two goals in the second half, strikes they got through Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes to move up to sixth in the Premier League . Varane missed 15 Game s through injury last season and Ten Hag revealed United didn't want to gamble on his fitness, especially with decent depth in central defence. He said: "He had complaints. So we didn't want to risk him. We know we have Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, good replacements. "So we don't take the risk, but what the complaint is and if it is really bad, we don&#

10 things we learned from the 2023 MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix

Image
Francesco Bagnaia’s total dominance of the Austrian Grand Prix was just one storyline in an eventful weekend for MotoGP. The Ducati rider now leads the championship by 62 points after registering his third sprint/grand prix double of the 2023 season. A decent challenge from KTM and Brad Binder wasn’t enough to throw Bagnaia off his perch, but it at least showed why the Austrian brand was keen to sign the South African to a contract through to the end of 2026. Elsewhere, chaos in the sprint race led to more criticism of the FIM’s stewarding in MotoGP – a topic we all hoped banished after the early-season fallouts. Off-track, the rider market kicked into another gear as the future of Johann Zarco was decided, while Marco Bezzecchi’s destination for 2024 is soon to be known. There was also a candid declaration from 2020 world champion Joan Mir that reminded us of the human toll Honda’s woes can take, while MotoGP’s tyre pressure rules took the blame for

RNF unveils Barbie-inspired livery for MotoGP Austrian GP

Image
This weekend’s 10th round of the 2023 season at the Red Bull Ring is sponsored by CryptoDATA, which is RNF’s title partner and part-owner. As a result, RNF is running a striking one-off light blue and pink livery for the RS-GPs of Miguel Oliveira and Raul Fernandez. The livery , according to the team’s social media channels, is inspired by Barbie – with the new film recently smashing box office records and grossing over a worldwide total of $1.2 billion. The RNF team became an Aprilia satellite partner for the 2023 season after its former parent manufacturer Yamaha wouldn’t commit to a multi-year deal. RNF, previously the Petronas Sepang Racing Team before it withdrew from grand prix racing at the end of 2021, endured a largely difficult first year in MotoGP last season with Yamaha. The switch to Aprilia machinery has provided a major boost for the squad, with Miguel Oliveira narrowly missing a podium at the British Grand Prix two weeks ago in fourt
