First full-size 3D scan of Titanic shows shipwreck in new light

Deep-sea researchers have completed the first full-size digital scan of the Titanic, showing the entire wreck in unprecedented detail and clarity LONDON -- Deep-sea researchers have completed the first full-size digital scan of the Titanic, showing the entire wreck in unprecedented detail and clarity, the companies behind a new documentary on the wreck said Thursday. Using two remote operated submersibles, a team of researchers spent six weeks last summer in the North Atlantic mapping the whole shipwreck and the surrounding 3-mile debris field, where personal belongings of the ocean liner's passengers such as shoes and watches were scattered. Richard Parkinson, founder and chief executive of deep-sea exploration firm Magellan, estimated that the resulting data — including 715,000 images — is 10 times larger than any underwater 3D model ever attempted before. “It's an absolutely one-to-one digital copy, a ‘twin,' of the Titanic in every detail,” said Anthony Geffen, head ...

LG Display to supply OLED TV panels to Samsung

SEOUL: South Korea's LG Display Co Ltd will start supplying high-end TV panels to Samsung Electronic Co Ltd from as early as this quarter, three sources said, in a deal that would help the loss-making flat-screen maker turn profitable. LG Display aims to supply 2 million units next year and boost shipments to 3 million and 5 million units in subsequent years, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Initial supplies to Samsung would likely be 77-inch and 83-inch white OLED (WOLED) TV panels . For Samsung, the deal highlights how it is looking to expand in high-end organic light emitting diode (OLED) TVs as competition heats up in the lower end with Chinese vendors. OLED panels cost nearly five times more than liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels. With this deal, Samsung could overtake Sony Corp as the second largest supplier of OLED TVs globally. Analysts have speculated that LG Display was in talks to supply OLED TV panels to a new cli...

Inflation in Argentina leaves families struggling to feed themselves

Gimena Páez could barely pay her bills BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Gimena Páez could barely pay her bills. Then inflation in Argentina started rising even faster. The value of the country's currency plunged, making most goods nearly unobtainable. Getting enough food for herself and her 11-year-old daughter became a daily struggle. Inflation has been a problem across the world but Argentina is second in a World Bank ranking of countries with the highest food inflation. On Friday, Argentina's state-run INDEC statistics agency said that the inflation in food prices over the 12 months ending in April was 115%. That has been topped only by Lebanon, with a whopping 352%. Life was never easy for the neighbors of Nueva Pompeya, a lower-middle-class neighborhood where Páez lives at the southern end of Argentina’s capital. These days, for many in Argentina, paying bills and getting to the end of the month have taken a backseat to a more basic problem: getting enough to eat. Argentina’s a...

Santos co-sponsoring bill to fight crime he's accused of

Image
Santos supports bill to fight crime he's accused of. Rep. George Santos co-sponsored a bill to crack down on a crime he is accused of. The House voted on H.R. 1163, known as the "Protecting Taxpayers and Victims of Unemployment Fraud Act," on Thursday. The bill, which passed by a vote of 230-200, would provide incentives to help states recover money that was lost to COVID unemployment fraud. Under the bill, states would retain 25% of recovered fraudulent overpayments and the statute of limitations for federal criminal charges or civil enforcement actions related to unemployment insurance fraud would be extended from five to 10 years. But on Wednesday, Santos was indicted on 13 criminal counts, including allegedly fraudulently applying for and receiving unemployment benefits during the COVID pandemic when he actually had a $120,000 salary working as a regional director of an investment firm, according to the charging documents. 22 dead women, no names: Interpol seeks clues on cold cases

Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, working with Interpol, have launched an international appeal to help identify 22 women who mostly met violent deaths PARIS -- The 22 women mostly met violent deaths. Their bodies, some dismembered, were found in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands over a span of 43 years — the most recent in 2019. Police say some showed signs of abuse or starvation. But who they were is unknown, frustrating detectives' hunts for their killers. Police hope that may change with the launch Wednesday of Operation Identify Me. The international appeal with Interpol is seeking public help to put names to the women . Such a breakthrough would, at a minimum, enable police to no longer have to identify the victims by their distinguishing features or apparel — "the woman with the flower tattoo," "the woman with the artificial nails" — or locations where their remains were discovered. The oldest of the cold cases, “The girl in the parking lot,” date...

Wall Street is holding relatively steady coming off its worst week in nearly two months as stocks of several beaten-down banks rally NEW YORK -- Wall Street is holding relatively steady Monday coming off its worst week in nearly two months, as stocks of several beaten-down banks rally. The S &P 500 was virtually unchanged in early trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was edging down by 16 points, or less than 0.1%, at 33,657, as of 9:45 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.2% lower. Besides a strong reading on U.S. jobs, which calmed worries about a possible recession but raised concerns about high inflation, last week was dominated by fears about smaller and mid-sized banks. PacWest Bancorp jumped 20.7% Monday to recover some of its steep 43% plunge last week. It said on Friday night that it’s cutting its dividend to help it build its financial strength. Several other smaller- and mid-sized banks also rose, including a 6.8% rise for Western Alliance Bancorp. T...

Perez perplexed by Verstappen: I simply could not do that

Image
Sergio Perez admits that he was perplexed by the gap to Max Verstappen during practice sessions at the Miami Grand Prix. The Mexican had been struggling to match the pace of his Red Bull teammate earlier in the weekend, but secured pole position in Saturday's qualifying after a crash for Charles Leclerc brought an early end to the session. Given his prior issues at the Miami International Autodrome, Perez was even more pleased to claim P1. "I'm very pleased, because it's been a very difficult weekend for me up to qualifying," Perez told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "I think this tarmac is just very different to anything else. And I was just trying to figure out how to get the maximum out of the car, out of the balance, because even on my final lap, I was still finding things out that were working better. "So we haven't had a straightforward weekend. So it tastes a lot better once you deliver under such a bad weekend." ...

New York, California probing workplace discrimination at NFL

The attorneys general of New York and California are investigating allegations of workplace discrimination at the NFL NEW YORK -- Prosecutors in New York and California launched an investigation of the NFL's workplace culture on Thursday, issuing subpoenas to executives of one of the world's richest Sports league in search of documents related to an array of accusations that include racial discrimination and sexual harassment. New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Attorney General Rob Bonta, both Democrats, say they are not targeting any of the league's 32 teams that take up so much of the country's cultural space. Instead, their probe is focused on the league itself, specifically its corporate offices in New York and California. The investigation is in response to what Bonta called a “robust public record” that points to a “disturbing and concerning set of allegations about gender and racial discrimination in the NFL.” That includes lawsuits fil...
