Officers will not face state charges in Jayland Walker police shooting

Image
A grand jury has decided not to indict officers on state criminal charges involved in the death of Jayland Walker. A grand jury has chosen not to indict officers on state criminal charges for the death of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old who was fatally shot after a car and foot chase by police on June 27, 2022, in Akron, according to Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. "The grand jury just a little while ago issued what is called a no bill, meaning that there will be no state criminal action, no charges at the state level," Yost said in a Monday press conference. Officers have said they had attempted to pull Walker over for a traffic violation and an equipment violation with his car. He apparently refused to stop, which set off a chase that ended in his death. Fox News and 2020 election lies set to face jury come Monday

A trial beginning Monday in Delaware will force Fox News executives and some of the network's stars to answer for their role in spreading doubt about the 2020 presidential election NEW YORK -- Starting Monday in a courtroom in Delaware, Fox News executives and stars will have to answer for their role in spreading doubt about the 2020 presidential election and creating the gaping wound that remains in America's democracy. Jurors hearing the $1.6 billion lawsuit filed against Fox by Dominion Voting Systems must answer a specific question: Did Fox defame the voting machine company by airing bogus stories alleging that the election was rigged against then-President Donald Trump, even as many at the network privately doubted the false claims being pushed by Trump and his allies? Yet the broader context looms large. The trial will test press freedom and the reputation of conservatives' favorite news source. It will also illuminate the flow of misinformation that helped spark ...

Escaped emu takes owner and police on 20-mile chase in Tennessee

Image
A local man's pet emu escaped and prompted a slow-speed police chase to capture the giant bird. A city-wide manhunt. A police chase down the main street. Social media sites filled with locals describing what they had just witnessed. While these are usually the tell-tale signs of crisis, the small city of Harriman, Tennessee, witnessed a different kind of community-wide commotion on Wednesday when a local man's pet emu escaped and prompted a slow-speed police chase to capture the giant bird. In this screen grab from a video, an emu leads police on a slow-speed chase in Harriman, Tenn., on April 12, 2023. Steven McDaniel "People were calling in that it was in their yard, and the first part of the morning, officers would go check and wouldn't see him," Harriman police chief Baron Tapp said. "And then somebody else would call and say, 'Hey, the Emu is in my yard now' or 'It's going over here over there.'" The emu at the center o...

Two-Universe Cosmological Model and “Moiré gravity” Proposed in New Study

Image
By laying a curved graphene sheet over another curved sheet, a new pattern is created that changes the way electricity moves through the sheets. Using a new model, similar physics may emerge if two adjacent universes are capable of interacting. Researchers at the University of Maryland observed that the behavior of electricity when two sheets of graphene interact can be interpreted as the physics of two-dimensional universes where electrons occasionally leap between the universes. They used hydrodynamic flows in various materials to simulate astrophysical phenomena. Their hypothesis was that a similar phenomenon would result from moiré patterns in other areas if they generalized the mathematics to universes of any number of dimensions, including our own four-dimensional universe. As a result of this research, scientists have been forced to face one of the main cosmological problems. “We discussed if we can observe moiré physics when two real universes coalesce into one,” Parhi...

BREAKING NEWS: Astronomers Just Found an Earth-Like Planet Practically Next-Door to Us

Image
Astronomers have discovered a new exoplanet that is slightly larger than Earth and orbits a red dwarf star 66.5 light-years away. It’s a good prospect, scientists think, to help cover our massive information vacuum regarding our Milky Way galaxy’s small, rocky planet population. Since the initial discovery of an exoplanet in 1992, our detection capabilities and understanding of exoplanets has almost exploded. Over 4,100 exoplanets have been confirmed in our galaxy as of this writing, and we now have a far better knowledge of planetary systems and how they develop and evolve. However, because we’re seeking for small, dim, or dark objects that are difficult to view from afar, the vast majority of verified exoplanets are chonkers – ice and gas giants the size of Neptune and larger. The Kepler and TESS exoplanet-hunting missions have increased the number of detections of smaller exoplanets: those with masses similar to Earth and Venus, and so likely to be rocky rather than gaseous...

This Image of the Total Eclipse Is Being Called “History’s Most Amazing Photo”

Image
Over 200 million Americans watched the total solar eclipse in August 2017, but no one had a better view than  photographer Jon Carmichael . He spent years plotting how he could capture the total eclipse in a unique way, eventually combining his passions for photography, Astronomy , and flight. “I wondered, if I got up high enough, could I actually see the moon’s shadow move across the Earth’s surface at 2,000 mph? That’s what I really wanted to see,” Carmichael tells My Modern Met. “And as a photographer, I wondered, can I actually capture this beautiful fleeting moment in our country from a unique perspective? This was the most photographed moment in History , so as a professional photographer that’s a lot of pressure.” By studying the eclipse path carefully, the photographer realized that Southwest Airlines runs a flight from Portland to St. Louis that would put him in the perfect position to view the event. Taking a once in a lifetime chance, Carmichael purchased a ticket ...

Countdown to the end of the world? NASA is keeping an eye on a massive asteroid that might wipe out human civilisation

Image
minus 56 days till impact… but not quite. NASA says its automated tracking systems at the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies in the U.S. state of California has detected an asteroid so big that it could wipe out the entire human race. Officially called 52768 (1998 OR2), the giant space rock is hurtling toward Earth at a speed of 31,320 km/h – or 8.7 km per second. If the asteroid keeps up this pace, it is expected to close in on our planet around January 28. But before you start running around like a headless chicken out of pure panic, hear this out: Scientists say it will only make a “close approach” and not actually enter Earth’s orbit. Approximately measuring up to 4.1 kilometers (2.5 miles) across, the rock’s size puts it in Planetary Society’s “very dangerous” category, which includes all space objects close to or larger than 1 km in diameter and puts them on a scale that threatens global destruction. “Small asteroid s – few meters – hit frequently and burn up ...

BREAKING: Astronomers find the fastest nova yet — and it never stops wobbling

Image
The unusual nova may give information on how star explosions populate the solar system and the universe as a whole. Matter stolen from a partner star flows into an accretion disc around a white dwarf in an intermediate polar system, such as the one depicted in this artist’s illustration. However, the magnetic field of the white dwarf disturbs that material, generating oscillations in the light radiated by the system. A faraway cosmic object energetically erupted just over a year ago, on June 12, 2021. The normally invisible star, a white dwarf syphoning material from its neighbouring companion, reached a maximum brightness of roughly magnitude 6.2, about 10,000 times brighter than it was before. In fact, the star became so bright that it could be seen with the naked eye for a brief moment. Within a single day, the new star, or nova, had dimmed to one-sixth of its peak brightness. Witnessing such a rapid decline is a first for a classical nova event like this. “It was only abo...

Hybrid solar eclipse: Everything you need to know about the rare and strange phenomenon (Video)

Image
Composite image of the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. A hybrid solar eclipse is a combination of a total, partial and annular solar eclipse but it’s impossible to experience both an annual and total solar eclipse during a hybrid event, so you have to make a choice! (Image credit: Alan Dyer/VW Pics/UIG via Getty Images) A hybrid solar eclipse is a very rare and strange astronomical event — and there’s one coming soon on April 20, 2023. Talk to most eclipse -chasers and they’ll tell you that there are three types of solar eclipse . The first is a partial eclipse of the most common and the least impressive because the moon merely blocks out part of the sun sending a shadow — the penumbra — across a swathe of Earth. The second is an annular solar eclipse , where the moon blocks out the center of the sun, but leaves a circle of light from the sun visible from within a shadow called the antumbra. It’s often called a “ring of fire”. The th...

Spending $20,000 to demonstrate that the Earth is flat, a flat Earther accidentally demonstrates that the Earth is round

Image
In what may be one of the most enjoyable TV moments we can recall, a bunch of conspiracy theorists unintentionally spent thousands of dollars to show that, yes, the Earth is round . A scene from Behind the Curve, a new Netflix documentary that follows a group of Flat Earthers, a “small but rising faction of people who firmly believe in a conspiracy that the Earth is flat.” Bob Knodel is one of those Flat Earthers. He runs a YouTube channel dedicated to the theory and is part of the team using a $20,000 laser gyroscope to prove the Earth doesn’t rotate. However, it does. Knodel explains: What we found is, when we turned on that gyroscope, we found that we were picking up a drift,” Knodel explains. “A 15-degree per hour drift. “Now, obviously we were taken aback by that – ‘Wow, that’s kind of a problem.’ “We obviously were not willing to accept that, and so we started looking for easy to disprove it was actually registering the motion of the Earth.” What we found is, whe...

Every Black Hole Has a Second Universe, According to Equations

Image
Like part of a cosmic Russian doll, our universe may be perfectly nested inside a black hole that is itself part of a larger universe. In turn, all the black holes found so far in our universe—from the microscopic to the supermassive—may be ultimate doorways into alternate realities. According to a mind-bending new theory, a black hole is actually a tunnel between universes—a type of wormhole. The matter the black hole attracts doesn’t collapse into a single point, as has been predicted, but rather gushes out a “white hole” at the other end of the black one, the theory goes. In a paper published in the journal Physics Letters B, Indiana University physicist Nikodem Poplawski presents new mathematical models of the spiraling motion of matter falling into a black hole. His equations suggest such wormholes are viable alternatives to the “space-time singularities” that Albert Einstein predicted to be at the centers of black holes. According to Einstein’s equations for general rela...

Nobody knows why Earth rang like a bell for 20 minutes

Image
Seismic sensors first picked up the event originating near an island between Madagascar and Africa. Then, alarm bells started ringing as far away as Chile, New Zealand and Canada. Hawaii, almost exactly on the other side of the planet, also picked up the “event.” Nobody knows what it was. Meteorite? Submarine volcano? Nuclear test? “I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it,” National Geographic reports Columbia University seismologist Göran Ekström as saying. “It doesn’t mean that, in the end, the cause of them is that exotic.” At the center of the mystery is the tiny island of Mayotte, positioned about halfway between Africa and Madagascar. It’s been subjected to a swarm of earthquakes since May. Most have been minor, but the biggest — on May 8 — was the largest in the island’s recorded History , topping at a magnitude of 5.8.But the earthquake swarm had been in decline before the mysterious ringing was detected earlier this month. Ekström, who specializes in unusual ea...
